The beliefs of an electorate influence the leaders they select. However, when a significant portion of the electorate holds delusional beliefs, those with rational perspectives may find it necessary to leave the city or state to avoid enduring the inevitable consequences of those leaders' delusions.
Washington State is predominantly a deep-blue state, and Seattle is even more so. The newly elected Smurf mayor, Katie Wilson, quickly shifted focus away from pressing local issues, opting instead to embrace a comfortable leftist agenda that risks endangering both residents and businesses.
Leftist policies tend to lean toward socialism. While they frequently use the term "equality," what they actually mean is the suppression of everyone. This may seem paradoxical, but that suppression often results in the elevation of individuals who are in the country illegally. By prioritizing the rights of these illegals, they undermine capitalism and trample on the rights of hard-working Americans.
One of those issues that should have garnered Wilson’s attention is the Seattle Police Department (SPD). The department is experiencing a significant staffing crisis and internal unrest, as many officers feel unsupported by city leadership. This is due to intense political pressure, slow contract negotiations, and a notable "mass exodus" of staff. Outgoing interim chief Sue Rahr noted that the workforce felt "betrayed.”
The department has faced "substantial" internal conflict, including allegations of discrimination and retaliation. Former Chief Adrien Diaz was terminated following allegations of creating a hostile work environment, promoting a romantic partner, and engaging in misconduct.
Officers have expressed frustration over the lack of support from city officials and shifting political priorities, which have led to high turnover rates. A net loss of 355 officers over four years has caused the department to shrink despite recruitment efforts.
Wilson took office on January 1st of this year and immediately added to the chaos. In the first 29 days, she directed the Police Department to surveil, identify, and build cases against ICE agents operating in the city. Four million dollars in taxpayer money went to left-wing organizations providing legal defense to illegal aliens, and federal agents were banned from city parks, parking lots, and public spaces for immigration enforcement.
Kent Loux, president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, told Fox News Digital what Wilson's directive actually means on the street.
"The current city's policy on us investigating ICE is very confusing for officers. What does investigating mean? What does identifying mean? This is a disastrous policy that is potentially putting officers and federal law enforcement pitting against one another."
He then added, "We are spinning our wheels."
Wilson entered a criminal justice system that allowed killers to return to the streets. She observed this and decided that ICE was the larger issue.
In 2024, Seattle ranked as the fourth-worst city among the 30 largest American cities for total crime, with a crime rate that is 172.9 percent above the national average.
Matt Humphrey, a barber with shops in Ballard and Roosevelt, lost $26,000 in retail due to a robbery last year and spent an additional $3,000 to replace a smashed front window. He also hired a former ATF agent to train his employees on de-escalation techniques because he feels that Seattle does not provide adequate protection for his business.
"I've been in this industry for 32 years, and for the past six years, it has just been miserable," Humphrey stated.
On day one, Wilson had to choose between protecting Seattle citizens and protecting illegal immigrants from deportation. She made the wrong choice, and now Seattle's residents are suffering.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer accurately pointed out that sanctuary city policies only create sanctuaries for criminals.
Loux also sees exactly where it leads.
"The rise of socialism is a concern for me. These socialist policies are a threat to public safety. What we're seeing is increased mandates, increased corporate taxes, and it seems that it is squeezing businesses and pushing them out of this city."
Washington's Democratic Governor, Bob Ferguson, has signed a 9.9 percent income tax on households earning more than $1 million, which will fund the police department that Wilson is already depleting.
When families and businesses leave a state, the tax base diminishes. If the state does not adjust its spending, it will require more revenue from fewer sources. A lesson that blue states are learning across the nation.
I live in a popular red state that has seen an influx of residents moving from blue states. We welcome them, but we hope they have learned the consequences of Democratic and liberal policies.
Bring your experiences and value, but leave your politics behind.
