(“The Democratic Coalition of Satan worshippers thanks Governor Tim Walz for not standing in the way of spreading Satanism in the State Capitol building. Satan has a special place for you.”)
Satanism sprouts in our seedy culture, this arena being already smitten by panagyric narcissism, like a sewer-raised, brown-stained, infernal rodent. (see How Satanism conquered America). Satanism itself offers a new-pseudo religion, yet rooted back thousands of years. What makes new Satanism so modern is the claim there is no God and therefore, no Satan, just an enabling cracked mirror, recasting ourselves in an orgy of self-indulgence. So the recent argument goes: Satanism worships a symbolic figure, proving he is just a metaphor for self-expression, or the right to follow your own fancy, in any direction. (see Increased Christianity in schools opens the door to Satanic Temple education programs).
Satan as Original Rebel opposing God as the ultimate Patriarchal tyrant. As seen in Shelley & Lord Byron‘s work from the Romantic Period. Is modern Satanism just the current expression of embittered juvenile rebellion, fixated on our Cult of Narcissism, metastasizing daily, as God Himself gets Nietzsche’s boot to the curb?
MN Gov Tim Walz, Satan Booster! Meanwhile, a story about Gov Tim Walz appeared: “Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz announced he will not disrupt a Satanic display at the state’s capitol building. Walz’ spokesman said the First Amendment “means that he does not police speech in the State Capitol.” The Satanists saluted Walz with a plaque inscribed with the following thanks: “The Democratic Coalition of Satan worshippers thanks Governor Tim Walz for not standing in the way of spreading Satanism in the State Capitol building. Satan has a special place for you.” (satanic Walz plaque pic below)

Jesus, addressing his critics in John 8:44: “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
Big Satanism Q’s: Of course the real questions of Satanism includes, If God exists, whether Satan is real? If so, is Satan granted his own powers to rebel, in perpetuity? Ergo, can he grant any prayer requests, via faith? Another--Whether Satan will be cast into hell for a full millennium, as prophesied--but, then--what happens to his devilish acolytes?
Rev 20-1-3: “Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven. He had in his hand a key to the hole without a bottom. He also had a strong chain. He took hold of the dragon, that old snake, who is the Devil, or Satan, and chained him for 1,000 years. The angel threw the devil into the hole without a bottom. He shut it and locked him in it. He could not fool the nations anymore until the 1,000 years were completed. After this he must be free for awhile.”
Satan as Symbol: The most recent humanist Satanist claims related to this topic is the claim--there is no actual Satan (movie The Usual Suspects quote: "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist," video), coming from the faux-science, anti-God movement of radical materialists. So reference to Satan is therefore symbolic and another form of humanism. This claim ultimately assumes a nontheistic Big-Bang occurred, as uncreated materials assembled themselves into a highly complex universe. So, there being no God to light the fuse, and therefore no Satan, the universe then spawned earth.. And that to extol Satan means to stand up to the historic and highly abusive patriarchy crippling our world. Nonetheless, Satanism appears to be a growing and truly malign influence in shaky times that worship of the world’s worst entity is thriving. Further, there are many odd satanic stories.
For example, see,The Sex-Cult ‘Antichrist’ Who Rocketed Us to Space--“On June 17, 1952, a boom rocked Pasadena, Calif., an explosion at a coach house on the old Cruikshank estate, a plot of land on Millionaires Row where a large manor once stood. The interior of the house was torn apart by a science experiment gone wrong. Amid the debris were strewn-about pages covered in symbols such as pentagrams and text written in unfamiliar languages. On the floor was the body of a man, in a pool of blood, whose face was half-ripped off and body shattered. The man was 37-year-old John “Jack” Whiteside Parsons: the father of modern rocketry….But before that, it was around his 12th birthday that Jack first dabbled in the occult--by attempting to contact the devil in his bedroom.”
Who is Satan? (Ligonaire Ministry): “In Scripture, the term Satan means “adversary,” aka the Devil. A high angelic creature who, before the creation of the human race, rebelled against God and now battles humans and God. Called the prince of darkness, father of lies, the accuser, and beguiling serpent. The biblical view of Satan is sophisticated, casting him as an “angel of light.” This image reveals Satan’s clever ability to manifest as the appearance of good. Satan is subtle, beguiling, and crafty and speaks with eloquence; in stunning appearance. The prince of darkness wears a cloak of light. The Bible calls Satan a roaring lion, seeking to devour foes. Christ is also referred to as a lion, the Lion of Judah. Christ redeemers, the anti-lion and devourer. Both images speak of strength.”
About Biblical Satan (biblical GotQuestions): “Satan is described as an angelic enemy of God and, so the enemy and opponent of God’s chosen. Although everything God created was initially good (Genesis 1:31), Satan chose to rebel against the Lord, while many other angels followed his rebellion (Ezekiel 28:15; Isaiah 14:12–17). Satan tempted Eve to sin in the Garden of Eden, and Adam followed her into sin, plunging the whole human race into a curse (Genesis 3:16–19; Romans 5:12). Pictured as a serpent and dragon in the Bible (Genesis 3:1; Revelation 12:9), Satan is a murderer and the father of lies. He promotes false doctrines and craftily seeks to keep unbelievers in spiritual bondage (John 8:44; 2 Corinthians 4:4; 11:14; 1 Timothy 4:1).”
But recall, as Jesus Himself was tempted by the old serpent: Matthew 4: 1-11--Temptation of Christ
4: 1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.]”
7 Jesus answered, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
SATAN’S ORIGINS? Dr. Guy Richard discusses origins of sin and fallen angels:
“The Bible implies Satan was created as an angel who then fell, choosing to rebel against God. Scripture implies he was thrown down, cast from heaven. We’re told he led many with him. So it wasn’t Satan alone, but many ruined angels following in that rebellion against God. Question: If Satan was an angel, created splendidly to serve God, he yet rejected God’s heaven. So, Satan chose to rebel against God, misleading legions of fellow angels. And if true, why did Satan choose this, which by definition would cause his destruction? Therefore, did sin and evil already exist for Satan to embrace evil, rather than to serve God?

Primitive and Modern Satanism:
Satanism is technically the worship of Satan. Contemporary Satanism was inaugurated with the Church of Satan in 1966. Earlier Proto-Satanism traces back to the French "Affair of the Poisons" scandal involving obscene rogue priests performing "black masses" with consecrated hosts for aristocratic elites, blending magic, sex, and inversion of Catholic rites, with dark, secretive rituals.
States Britannica: “Affair of the Poisons video, one of the most sensational criminal cases of 17th-century France. In 1679 an inquiry revealed that nobles, prosperous bourgeois, and the common people alike had been resorting secretly to female fortune-tellers--at that time numerous in Paris--for drugs and poisons, for black masses, and for other criminal purposes.”
Alestair Evil-Eyes Crowley: Then followed a 19th century formalized "First Satanism," developed by the likes of Aleister Crowley, (11/12/1875-12/1/1947). Most Evil Man in Europe. Britannica: Crowley was a British occultist, writer, and mountaineer, and practitioner of “magick” and called himself the Beast 666, drawn from the number of the beast in the Book of Revelation. Denounced in his own time for his decadent lifestyle. But an actual real-life magical duel occurred between brilliant poet William Butler Yeats and Aleister Crowley, ending triumphantly when Yeats kicked Crowley down the stairs of the Golden Dawn HQ in London. Called the Battle of Blythe Road.
Modern Satanism: Theistic Satanism, God Implied--or Atheistic Satanism: “Theistic Satanism is largely a 20th century development. Followers are called "traditional Satanists" or "spiritual Satanists." Many Satanists learned via Anton LaVey's "Satanic Bible," written in 1969. While some small groups practiced theistic Satanism, it took the internet for a community to take hold.” Left-Hand Path Satanists consider their practices from the left-hand path, meaning a focus on the self rather than religious authority.”
LaVey Church of Satan: Recently, In the US, the Church of Satan began on Walpurgisnacht (witch's night), April 30, 1966, by Anton Szandor LaVey. Between 1957-60, Anton Lavey, former carnival worker and musician, held night classes in the occult. Regular attendees eventually formed the Church of Satan. He served as its high priest until his death in 1997. The Satanic Bible was first published in 1969 by Anton LeVey. It is a collection of essays, divided into four sections: (2) The Book of Satan, (2) The Book of Lucifer, (3) The Book of Belial, and (4) The Book of Leviathan. Another book by LeVey is, The Satanic Rituals: Companion to The Satanic Bible. Levy was raised in and disliked the Catholic Church, so many of the rituals in Satanism are anti-Catholic by design. They often use silver vessels, instead of gold and have black mass instead of mass. The Bible has 10 Commandments, so by design Satanic Church has 9 Statements.
CONCLUSION: Most modern Satanists seem to claim to be atheists, for several reasons. First, this takes away the claim they worship an evil figure. Second, because today’s society is much more atheistic than in the past. Third, so they can claim to be humanists who generally love society and its people. And fourth, perhaps because worshipping a devil incarnate just sounds unhinged. But all this doesn’t mean that Satan doesn’t exist. Sadly, Satanism will generally keep folks from taking Christianity seriously, all else being equal. And, don't forget, there are many Satanists who believe he exists, as the point of their whole existence.
