Hypocrite Celebrities About Climate: Don’t Do As We Do, Do As We Say!

They just don't get it;

Politicians, celebrities and billionaires who lecture about carbon footprints operate by a separate set of rules. Living in ostentatious opulence, they exude spectacular hypocrisy that is rarely challenged by media outlets amplifying their climate warnings. (1)

Even scientists fly thousands of miles to United nations climate conferences, adding to emissions of greenhouse gases they claim are destroying the earth. This is a two-tiered climate morality where those with power indulge in luxuries while ordinary folks are asked to sacrifice living standards. Preaching austerity from a private jet has become the let-them-est-cake of our age.

For perspective, compare this with CO2 emissions from countries like Bangladesh (0.71 tons per capita), Ghana (0.74 tons), Ethiopia (0.14 tons) and Kenya (0.38 tons). A single year of indulgence by an American icon outweighs the lifetime footprint of entire villages in developing nations. (1)

Consider filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who chastised those he labels ‘climate deniers,’ suggesting a moral failing on the part of anyone who questions the legitimacy of climate alarm. “Everybody has to be held responsible for their role in climate change,” he declared, seemingly oblivious to a personal lifestyle that creates a carbon footprint equivalent to nearly 280 average Americans or more than 2,200 typical Indians.

In 2022, Taylor Swift and Leonardo DiCaprio emitted 3,000 to 4,400 tons of carbon dioxide annually from jet-setting alone, hundreds of thousands of times the average citizen’s output. DiCaprio has built a global brand around climate activism. Yet, he famously flew on a private jet from Europe to New York to accept an environmental award, a trip that likely produced more emissions than most of us will in a year.

Harrison Ford has said, “Everything we’ve said about climate change has come true. Why is that not sufficient that it alarms people that they change behavior?”

Eric Worrall asks, “But is it OK for the important to use private jets?” He adds, “I think I can safely speak for most folks, that thanks to Harrison ford’s climate leadership, we hereby all agree to only fly in private jets when we have to, when we can afford it, when it is convenient, when we feel like it, or when we can’t be bothered to wait in the airport queue.” (2)

Kim Kardashian, who’s spent years fighting climate change, arrived in her $65 million Gulfstream G650

Harrison Ford has made regular appearances at global conferences, calling upon individuals and government leaders to support efforts to reduce emissions and prevent disastrous global warming. Ford owns 10 airplanes and at least as many cars and motorcycles.

A throng of Hollywood celebrities who’ve spent years lecturing about the peril we all face from climate change, hopped on private jets set for Venice where Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s three day wedding extravaganza took place. (3)

A-listers like Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Orlando Bloom, and his ex-fiance Katy Perry flocked to the picturesque ‘Floating City.’ While mega-wealthy stars, many of whom own their own private jets, landed at Marco Polo Airport in the days leading up to the $50 million bash.

Kim Kardashian, who’s spent years fighting climate change, arrived in her $65 million Gulfstream G650.

If hypocrisy among celebrities is glaring, the behavior of politicians is worse. Records show that Bernie Sanders’ campaign committee spent over $221,000 on private jets in just the first quarter of the year, despite Sanders voting for legislation that punishes fossil fuel use and even suggesting criminal penalties for energy executives.

Power The Future (PTF) analyzed Bernie Sanders’ travel itinerary across 16 stops on his “Fighting Oligarchy Tour”, comparing many with multiple daily nonstop departures for times to meet his next event. Sanders chose the most carbon intensive for travel available.

The results are striking:

  • 7 tons of CO2 were emitted from just five private flights where commercial travel was viable.
  • That’s 45 times more CO2 per leg than flying commercial, per passenger.
  • To put in context, that’s more than the average American produces in five years.

"Do as we say, but not as we do.”

Sanders said, “Climate change is a moral and existential threat demanding sweeping government intervention and dramatic personal behavior—except, of course, when it comes to how he lives his own life.

When questioned about the blatant hypocrisy, Sanders didn’t offer contrition. He doubled down. “You think I’m going to be sitting on a waiting line at United, while 30,000 people are waiting?” he snapped at Bret Baier. (5)

It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it. That is the rationale driving upwards of 10,000 climate doomers jetting to the French riviera city of Nice in June 2025 for what the United Nations deemed the latest climate emergency meeting. (6)

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s fighting oligarchy tour, meant to challenge wealth and privilege, has been marked by her own carbon intensive travel. While AOC has toned down her jet-setting in response to criticism, opting for first class flights instead of private jets, her emissions still far exceed those of her constituents. (1)

Prince William came under heavy criticism after traveling roughly 8,800 kilometers on a plane to Brazil for the Earthshot Prize ceremony.

Prince William and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer flew in a taxpayer funded private jet to COP30 in Brazil to tell plebes how to save the planet. “Do as we say, but not as we do.” (3)

Prince Harry reportedly took multiple flights for personal travel and events, some of which were uncovered by media investigators. Both he and Meghan have defended their travel as necessary for security reasons and time constraints. After the backlash, the couple has snuck into a commercial plane to silence criticism.

Summary

United Nations climate conferences are often in far flung locations like Dubai, Glasgow or Sharm el-Sheikh. Each transcontinental flights emits up to 2 tons of CO2 per person. For a single conference, a scientist’s travel emissions can rival a year’s worth of a developing nation’s citizen. Yet these scientists push for restrictions on energy use in poorer countries necessary to combat climate change.

It’s hard to overstate the hypocrisy: a self-styled climate champion flying solo in luxury jets while urging everyday Americans to cut back on meat, driving, and heating their homes.

Jet setters are not leading a transition to a new energy future but rather building a world where their privileges are protected while those of lesser position must bear whatever loss is necessary for the greater good.

A number of celebrities don’t ‘walk the walk’ when it comes to climate change—they just talk. These prominent personalities demand people scale back their lifestyles and accept spartan living, all the while these same celebrities enjoy rich and lavish lifestyles in huge mansions, private jets and yachts.
