Michael Savage Was Right All Along

In many ways, Michael Savage could be considered the Ayn Rand or George Orwell of the 21st century, warning us to pay attention to who is really running our beloved country

Many CFP readers may not be familiar with a former radio talk show host in the San Francisco Bay Area named Michael Savage. From 1994 to 2020, his nationally syndicated radio show called “The Savage Nation” ran Monday through Friday on 400 stations and was the second most listened to radio talk show in America in 2009. With an audience of over 20 million listeners at the show’s peak, Savage garnered a loyal following. However, like his contemporary Rush Limbaugh, his listeners either loved him or hated him. Borders, Language, Culture

Michael Savage’s social and political views were essentially conservative, pro-American, and pro-God. However, many called him a nationalist or “extremist” because he also believed strongly in protecting America’s borders, language, and culture. In fact, Savage’s talking points on this topic so outraged certain government leaders in Great Britain in 2009 that the UK permanently banned him from entering their country.

So, what was it about Savage’s message that so upset the Brits and American liberals? It was apparently his insistence that “it is borders, language, and culture” that truly define a nation. Savage believed those three things need to be fiercely protected for any nation to survive and thrive. (Personally, I think that sounds very reasonable, but apparently the Left doesn’t agree.)

I don’t think anyone prior to Savage had clearly articulated this idea before, or if they had, they had not stated it so emphatically as he did. The criticism Savage received for sharing his opinions on this and many other social and/or political issues was usually swift and shrill, but he was undaunted and continued to make his case over the air, in print, and in person.

As I look back on what Savage had to say on the topic of protecting America’s borders, language, and culture, I realize how right he was to be so concerned. It was prescient that Savage talked about the importance of monitoring and securing our U.S. borders 20 years ago, long before we Americans experienced the insanely high number of illegal border crossings we saw during the Biden administration.

Savage felt strongly that liberalism and progressivism were degrading American culture

Savage also firmly believed that legal immigrants needed to learn our primary language – English – and he railed against the San Francisco city and county officials who wanted to continue publishing voting materials in several languages, including different dialects of Chinese. He also liked to point out that English is considered “the international language” worldwide, but at that time the United States had not passed a law establishing English as our official language. (I’m guessing the Executive Order recently signed by President Trump to make English our official language has made Savage very happy.)

Savage also believed that legal immigrants needed to adapt, adjust, and/or assimilate to our culture in order to live productive, successful lives in the United States. Certainly, he would not have been in favor of providing illegal immigrants with “the perks” that the Biden administration and mayors of sanctuary cities provided to them over the last decade. When someone is provided a monthly monetary stipend and other regular “handouts,” it takes away the person’s incentive to get their act together and start taking care of their own needs.

Furthermore, Savage felt strongly that liberalism and progressivism were degrading American culture, and we again can see he was correct in his belief based on what’s currently happening in America today after essentially 12 years of ultraliberal and progressive programs and ideas being forced upon Americans during the presidential terms of Obama and then Biden.

Liberalism is a Mental Disorder

“Economies can be rebuilt, armies can be repopulated, but once a nation’s pride is gone it can almost never be restored. The loss of a nation’s honor is something not even centuries can repair. The next president must love America. The next president must embody unequivocally everything that is good about this country going back to its founding. The next president must be the exact opposite of Barack Obama . . .” ~ Michael Savage, from Trickle Down Tyranny: Crushing Obama’s Dream of the Socialist States of America (2013)

During his lifetime, Savage has written over 30 books and novels, and many of his political books have appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list. Some of his most popular political titles include The Enemy Within; Government Zero: No Borders, No Language, No Culture; Trump’s War: His Battle for America; and Liberalism is a Mental Disorder (my personal favorite).

I find it interesting that after spending several years as an aspiring writer and poet hanging out with beatniks in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood in the 1970’s, Savage ultimately came to realize he wanted to live a more substantive and meaningful life. When asked about his change in political and social views, Savage simply said, “I was once a child; I am now a man.” And what a formidable man and strong voice he became as he honed his skills as a talk show host, political commentator, social activist, and prolific writer.

Savage, whose legal name is Michael Alan Weiner, came from humble beginnings. He was born to immigrant parents in Bronx, New York, in 1942. His father was a Russian with deep Jewish roots and his mother was a Canadian from Montreal. In my opinion, the remarkable life Michael Savage has created for himself illustrates what can happen when you take advantage of the many educational and entrepreneurial opportunities America offers to anyone who is willing to put in the hard work and commitment to attaining their personal goals. Even now at age 82, Savage continues to work, write, and pontificate as only he can do. His new “Savage Nation” program is now being aired on Newsmax TV on Sundays. In many ways, Michael Savage could be considered the Ayn Rand or George Orwell of the 21st century, warning us to pay attention to who is really running our beloved country.

“As much as the left fashions themselves as being progressive, they’re not. In reality, today’s leftist movement is made in much the same way as sausage – it’s a blend of fascist, communist, and socialist ideologies from twentieth-century Europe, with a pinch of Nazism, all ground together, yet retaining the flavor of its various parts.” ~ Michael Savage, from Liberalism is a Mental Disorder (2005)
