My maternal grandmother was one of the finest women I ever knew. Every bit as wonderful as my mother. Like my mom, she was totally selfless. Her parents put her on a ship from Italy to New York when she was just 14 years old, in the late 19th century. She married, had six children—3 boys and 3 girls—and lost two: one girl at 20 and a boy at 14 from disease, probably the Spanish flu. She lost her husband from an accident on their farm. I once asked her why she never remarried. She looked at me and said, "I could never bring a strange man into our house with young girls."
